Ingredients
Scale
Sauce
- 1 tbsp dijon mustard (full grain)
- 1 tbsp breakfast syrup
Sandwich
- 2 waffles (leftover homemade or store-bought. If using frozen store-bought, cook prior to making your sandwich)
- 1/4 cup Borden Cheese Thick Cut Shreds, Mild or Sharp Cheddar (divided)
- 1/2 apple (thinly sliced)
Instructions
- Preheat Griddle: Preheat a counter griddle or panini press, such as a Foreman grill, to medium heat and spray it with nonstick spray like coconut oil to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Sauce: Mix together the dijon mustard and breakfast syrup in a small bowl and set aside to use as a flavorful spread inside the sandwich.
- Assemble Waffles: Lay the two waffles side by side and spread half of the syrup-mustard mixture on the inside surface of each waffle.
- Add Cheese Layer: On the waffle that will serve as the bottom of the sandwich, sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the syrup mixture.
- Add Apple Slices: Layer thinly sliced apple halves over the cheese on the bottom waffle to add sweetness and texture.
- Finish Cheese Layer: Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese over the apple slices to ensure a gooey melted center.
- Close Sandwich: Place the other waffle on top, syrup side down, to complete the sandwich assembly.
- Cook Sandwich: Place the assembled sandwich onto the preheated griddle and close it inside the grill. Cook for about 5 minutes or until the waffles are toasted golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
- Serve: Carefully cut the sandwich in half and serve immediately while warm and melty. Enjoy your flavorful Apple Cheddar Waffle Sandwich!
Notes
- If using frozen store-bought waffles, be sure to cook them before assembling the sandwich for best texture.
- Use a firm apple variety like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for nice crunch and balance of sweet-tart flavor.
- Adjust the amount of dijon mustard and syrup to taste for either a tangier or sweeter sandwich.
- Leftover sandwiches can be reheated in a toaster oven or panini press for quick warm-up.
- Try experimenting with different cheddar types such as sharp or mild to vary the flavor profile.
