Description

Enjoy the classic comfort of Salisbury steak with this Bobby Flay-inspired recipe. Juicy ground beef patties smothered in a savory mushroom gravy, perfect for a cozy dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef Patties:

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef (80/20)
  • ½ cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
  • 8 ounces cremini or button mushrooms (sliced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
  • ½ teaspoon thyme leaves

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef Patties: Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 oval patties.
  2. Sear the Patties: Sear patties in a skillet until browned but not fully cooked. Set aside.
  3. Make the Mushroom Gravy: Cook onions, mushrooms, and garlic. Stir in flour, then slowly whisk in beef broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Simmer until thickened.
  4. Simmer and Serve: Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over each, cover, and simmer until cooked through. Serve hot with additional gravy.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute half the ground beef with ground pork.
  • Pair with mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles for a classic meal.
