Ingredients
Scale
For the Filling
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
- 1 cup (100 g) shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions (about 2-3 green onions)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For Assembly and Frying
- 10-12 egg roll wrappers
- Approximately 2 cups (500 ml) oil for deep frying
Instructions
- Cook the Ground Beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef seasoned with salt, pepper, and garlic powder until browned and fully cooked through. Drain any excess fat to keep the filling from being greasy.
- Add Flavors and Cool: Stir in Worcestershire sauce and chopped green onions into the cooked beef. Cook together for another 1-2 minutes to meld the flavors, then remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly, making it easier to handle when assembling.
- Assemble the Egg Rolls: Lay an egg roll wrapper flat and place 2-3 tablespoons of the beef filling in the center. Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded cheddar cheese over the filling. Fold the sides over the filling tightly, then roll the wrapper up from one edge and seal the edges firmly to prevent them from opening during frying.
- Heat the Oil: In a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pan, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature for safe and even frying.
- Fry the Egg Rolls: Carefully place the assembled egg rolls in the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until the wrappers are golden brown and crisp, turning occasionally for even coloring.
- Drain and Serve: Remove the fried egg rolls with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces such as ketchup, mustard, or a spicy aioli.
Notes
- Make sure the beef mixture is cooled before assembling to prevent the wrappers from tearing or becoming soggy.
- Use a good quality oil with a high smoke point like vegetable or peanut oil for frying.
- If you prefer a healthier option, bake the egg rolls at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, turning halfway through until golden and crisp.
- Experiment with different cheeses or add pickles and ketchup inside for a classic cheeseburger flavor.
- Seal the egg rolls well using a bit of water or beaten egg to keep them closed during frying.
