Ingredients
Scale
For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For the Dough
- 1 cup water
- 2 ½ tablespoons sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
For Frying
- Oil for frying (about 2 ½ inches deep, such as vegetable or canola oil)
Instructions
- Prepare Cinnamon Sugar Mix: In a medium bowl or a brown paper bag, combine ½ cup granulated sugar with 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Set this mixture aside to coat the churros later.
- Heat the Frying Oil: Pour about 2 ½ inches of oil into a deep-fryer or heavy-bottom pot and heat it to 375°F (190°C). Maintain the temperature for perfect frying.
- Make the Dough: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup water, 2 ½ tablespoons sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, then immediately remove from heat.
- Incorporate Flour: Stir in the 1 cup all-purpose flour vigorously until the dough pulls together into a ball and leaves the sides of the pan clean.
- Form Dough Balls: Allow the dough to cool until it’s safe to handle. Scoop and roll the dough into walnut-sized balls, making sure they’re evenly sized for consistent frying.
- Fry the Poppers: Carefully place 3-4 dough balls into the hot oil at a time, ensuring the pan is not overcrowded. Fry them until they develop an even golden brown color, usually about 2-3 minutes, then remove them with a slotted spoon.
- Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: Immediately transfer the hot churro poppers into the cinnamon sugar mixture and shake or stir well so they get a sweet and aromatic coating.
- Repeat and Serve: Continue frying the remaining dough balls in batches, repeating the coating process. Serve warm for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- Be careful not to overcrowd the oil during frying to ensure even cooking and prevent oil temperature from dropping.
- Maintain oil temperature at 375°F for crispy exterior and proper cooking inside.
- You can keep fried churros warm in a low oven while finishing the rest.
- Use a slotted spoon or spider for safe removal of fried poppers from hot oil.
- Serve churros poppers fresh for maximum crispness; they are best enjoyed the same day.
