Description

Indulge in the nostalgic flavors of a classic Patty Melt with this easy-to-follow recipe. This American diner favorite features juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and Swiss cheese, all sandwiched between slices of rye bread and grilled to perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the Beef Patties:

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Additional Ingredients:

  • 4 slices of rye bread
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Thousand Island dressing (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter with olive oil. Add sliced onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook until caramelized, about 20–25 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Beef Patties: Season ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into two patties and cook in the skillet until browned and cooked through, about 3–4 minutes per side. Set aside.
  3. Assemble the Sandwiches: Layer bread slices with cheese, beef patties, caramelized onions, and more cheese. Grill in butter until golden and cheese melts, about 3–4 minutes per side. Serve warm with Thousand Island dressing if desired.

Notes

  • Rye bread can be substituted with sourdough or Texas toast.
  • American or cheddar cheese can be used instead of Swiss.
