Ingredients
Scale
Sausages and Bread
- 4 Italian sausage links (mild or hot)
- 4 hoagie or sausage rolls
Vegetables and Seasoning
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 bell peppers (one red, one yellow), sliced
- 1 large yellow onion, sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Optional Condiments
- Mustard
- Mayonnaise
- Melted provolone cheese
Instructions
- Preheat Grill: Preheat your grill to medium heat to ensure even cooking of the sausages and to get a nice char without burning.
- Grill Sausages: Place the Italian sausages on the grill and cook for 12–15 minutes, turning occasionally to brown all sides, until thoroughly cooked and the exterior is nicely charred.
- Sauté Peppers and Onions: While sausages grill, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced bell peppers and onions, then season with oregano, salt, and black pepper. Sauté for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are soft and slightly caramelized.
- Toast Rolls: During the last 2–3 minutes of grilling, place the hoagie rolls cut-side down on the grill to toast lightly and develop a bit of crispness.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Place each grilled sausage into a toasted roll, top generously with the sautéed peppers and onions. Add optional condiments like mustard, mayonnaise, or melted provolone cheese as desired.
Notes
- For extra flavor, deglaze the pepper and onion pan with a splash of balsamic vinegar or white wine after sautéing.
- Substitute chicken sausage or plant-based sausage to accommodate dietary preferences.
- Use mild or hot Italian sausages depending on your heat preference.
- Adding melted provolone cheese creates a rich, gooey sandwich variation.
