Description

This Instant Pot Sloppy Joes recipe is a quick and flavorful twist on the classic American comfort food. Using lean ground beef, fresh vegetables, and a tangy homemade sauce, it takes just 30 minutes from prep to plate, making it a perfect weeknight dinner. The pressure cooking infuses the flavors deeply, resulting in tender, juicy Sloppy Joe filling served on toasted buns and customizable with your favorite toppings like coleslaw, pickles, and cheese.

Ingredients

Scale

Sloppy Joe Filling

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon ground paprika
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 2/3 cup water
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

To Serve

  • Toasted buns
  • Coleslaw (optional)
  • Pickles (optional)
  • Cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brown meat: Set the Instant Pot to the “sauté” function. Add the oil, then cook the chopped onion and green bell pepper until softened, about 2 minutes. Add the lean ground beef and minced garlic, then cook until the beef is thoroughly browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  2. Add remaining ingredients: Stir in the light brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, ground paprika, ketchup, water, and season with salt and pepper. Mix everything well to combine evenly.
  3. Cook: Close the Instant Pot lid and set the valve to the “sealing” position. Select the “pressure cook” or “manual” function on high pressure for 5 minutes. Once the time is up, perform a quick pressure release by carefully turning the valve to “venting.” Open the lid once the pressure is fully released.
  4. Serve: Spoon the hot Sloppy Joe mixture onto toasted buns and top with your favorite options such as coleslaw, pickles, or cheese for added flavor and texture.

Notes

  • For a leaner option, use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
  • If you prefer a spicier Sloppy Joe, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the mixture.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • You can add extra veggies like diced mushrooms or shredded carrots for added nutrition.
  • Make sure to use the pressure release carefully to avoid steam burns.
