Meatloaf Mixture
- 2/3 cup dried whole wheat breadcrumbs (soaked)
- 3/4 cup + 1 1/2 tablespoons milk (divided)
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
- 2 eggs (slightly beaten)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon sage
Glaze
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/4 cup ketchup
Instructions
- Soak breadcrumbs: Stir together the dried whole wheat breadcrumbs and 1/2 cup of the milk until well combined and the breadcrumbs are softened.
- Mix ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the soaked breadcrumbs, remaining 1/4 cup milk, ground beef, beaten eggs, finely chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and sage. Mix until all ingredients are thoroughly blended without overmixing.
- Shape meatloaf: Transfer the meat mixture into a loaf pan, pressing gently to form an even loaf shape.
- Prepare glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together brown sugar and ketchup until smooth and well combined.
- Apply glaze: Spread the glaze evenly over the top of the meatloaf to create a flavorful topping.
- Bake meatloaf: Place the loaf pan in an oven preheated to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 45 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
- Rest and transfer: Once cooked, remove the meatloaf from the oven and carefully transfer it to a serving platter or plate to rest briefly.
- Serve: Slice the meatloaf into 8 to 9 servings and enjoy. Refrigerate any leftovers promptly.
Notes
- Using whole wheat breadcrumbs adds a healthy fiber boost and a nuttier flavor.
- Soaking the breadcrumbs in milk helps keep the meatloaf moist.
- You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or a mix of meats for variation.
- Ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F to guarantee the meatloaf is safely cooked.
- Allow the meatloaf to rest for a few minutes before slicing for better texture and juiciness.
