Ingredients
Scale
Caramel Sauce
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
French Toast
- 1 loaf brioche or challah bread, sliced 1-inch thick
- 5 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups half-and-half
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Prepare the Caramel Base: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter, brown sugar, and light corn syrup together, stirring until the mixture is smooth and fully combined. Immediately pour this caramel mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly across the bottom.
- Layer the Bread: Arrange the 1-inch thick slices of brioche or challah bread in a single layer over the warm caramel in the baking dish. Ensure the slices cover the caramel completely to absorb the flavors.
- Make the Custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, vanilla extract, and salt until fully blended and smooth. This mixture will soak into the bread to create the custard base.
- Soak the Bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread slices, making sure all pieces are well soaked. Gently press the bread down to help it absorb the custard. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap or a lid, then refrigerate overnight to let the casserole soak.
- Bake the Casserole: The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the cover and bake the French toast casserole uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is lightly golden.
- Rest and Serve: Let the dish sit for about 5 minutes after baking to allow it to firm up slightly. When serving, spoon some of the caramel sauce from the bottom of the pan over each portion to enhance the flavor and presentation.
Notes
- For best results, use day-old brioche or challah bread to absorb the custard better without becoming too soggy.
- If you prefer a stronger caramel flavor, sprinkle a little extra brown sugar on top before baking.
- You can add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard mixture for a warm spice note.
- This French toast casserole can be reheated gently in the oven or microwave for leftovers.
- Serve with fresh berries or whipped cream to add brightness and texture.
