Ingredients
Scale
Blue Layer
- 1 ounce blue curaçao
- 1 ounce lime juice
- 2 ounces blanco tequila
- 1/2 ounce agave syrup
- Ice for shaker and glasses
White Layer
- 1 ounce Cointreau
- 1 ounce lime juice
- 2 ounces blanco tequila
- Ice for shaker
Red Layer
- 4 ounces red wine (divided, approximately 2 ounces per glass)
Instructions
- Prepare Glasses and Blue Layer: Fill 2 highball or pint glasses full of ice. Add a handful of ice to a cocktail shaker. Combine 1 ounce blue curaçao, 1 ounce lime juice, 2 ounces blanco tequila, and 1/2 ounce agave syrup in the shaker. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10 to 20 seconds until the mixture is chilled. Carefully pour the blue margarita evenly into the two glasses, filling about one-third of each glass. Rinse the shaker to prepare for the next layer.
- Add the White Layer: Add a handful of ice to the now clean shaker. Pour in 1 ounce Cointreau, 1 ounce lime juice, and 2 ounces blanco tequila. Shake again for 10 to 20 seconds until cold. To layer, slowly pour half of the white margarita mixture over the back of a spoon held just above the blue layer in each glass. This technique helps the white layer float gently on top of the blue layer, creating a distinct separation.
- Top with the Red Layer: Pour about 2 ounces of red wine per glass using the back of a spoon to slowly float it over the white layer. This completes the patriotic color scheme with a vibrant red top. Serve the layered margaritas immediately and enjoy your festive drink!
Notes
- Use chilled ingredients and plenty of ice to help layers float and maintain separation.
- Pouring over the back of a spoon is essential for creating distinct layers without mixing.
- Adjust liquor amounts to taste but maintain layering technique for best visual effect.
- Serve immediately to keep the layers from blending.
- Use a sturdy glass like a highball or pint glass to accommodate the layered drink.
