Description

A simple, fresh, and creamy Tomato and Cream Cheese Sandwich made with soft cream cheese, juicy tomato slices, and optional fresh basil and balsamic vinegar for enhanced flavor. Perfect for a quick, light meal or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread

  • 4 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or your favorite type)

Cream Cheese Spread

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar (optional for added flavor)

Tomato

  • 1 large tomato, sliced

Additional

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil (optional for toasting the bread)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cream Cheese Spread: In a small bowl, use a fork or spatula to soften and mix the cream cheese. Add a pinch of salt, pepper, and chopped fresh basil or chives if using to enhance the flavor.
  2. Optional Flavor Boost: Stir in a teaspoon of balsamic vinegar into the cream cheese spread for added tang and richness.
  3. Toast the Bread (optional): Lightly toast the bread slices in a toaster or on a skillet with a small drizzle of olive oil until crisp and golden.
  4. Spread the Cream Cheese: Generously spread the prepared cream cheese mixture on one side of each slice of bread.
  5. Layer the Tomatoes: Arrange the sliced tomato evenly over the cream cheese on one slice of bread.
  6. Season: Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Add fresh basil or other herbs on top of the tomatoes for extra flavor, if desired.
  7. Assemble and Serve: Place the second slice of bread, cream cheese side down, on top of the tomatoes to form the sandwich. Slice in half and serve immediately for best freshness.

Notes

  • Using ripe, fresh tomatoes will greatly enhance the flavor of the sandwich.
  • To keep sandwiches fresh if preparing ahead, wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate.
  • The optional balsamic vinegar adds a nice depth but can be omitted if you prefer a milder taste.
  • For a gluten-free option, substitute the bread with a gluten-free variety.
  • Lightly toasting the bread improves texture but is not necessary for a delicious sandwich.
